Happy Feet

WARNING: May Cause Toe-Tapping.

George Miller, the man who gave the world Babe, now does for penguins what he did for pigs in this toe-tapping, "happy feat" of remarkable animated movie-making. In the works long before last year's surprise hit documentary, March of the Penguins, this clever family film is set in an arctic world where these black and white creatures sing for their supper and just about everything else— including their mates. When Mumble (Elijah Wood) comes out of his eggshell dancing instead of humming, he is almost immediately cast out of the community. "It just ain't penguin," says his distraught dad (Hugh Jackman). Although he tries, he is even rejected by his true love Gloria (Brittany Murphy) when he deceives her into thinking he can carry a tune. Hooking up with a bunch of Latino emperor penguins led by Ramon and a feathered guru named Lovelace, (both voiced by Robin Williams) he eventually discovers being unique isn't such a bad thing. That also goes for this well-crafted 'toon, which sets itself apart from the endless spate of copycat animated talking animal features this year. It does so with heart, soul, a great soundtrack (including a catchy new song from Prince) and the best looking CGI work seen in this type of film in years. No question, these earthbound birds will be high steppin' it all the way to the Academy Awards—and fortunately they don't even have to rent a tux.
