In Petit Pays, Éric Barbier faithfully adapts Gaël Faye’s celebrated novel about the 1994 Rwandan genocide as seen through the eyes of a child from neighbouring Burundi, from the innocence of kids’ games to the emergence of ethnic hatred, creeping danger and ambient chaos, to face-to-face encounters with death and madness.
The mixed-race son of a French entrepreneur father (Jean-Paul Rouve) and a mother of Rwandan origins (Isabelle Kabano), Gabriel lives carefree days in Burundi, with his group of friends and well sheltered in the comfortable family villa. But a shadow looms: the parting and break-up of his parents. Meanwhile, the growing Hutu-Tutsi ethnic divisions in neighbouring Rwanda (where part of Gabriel’s mother’s family lives) are threatening to turn into a blood-thirsty tidal wave.
Maintaining the intimate and familial aspects of its source material, Petit Pays is both endearing and a sensitive portrayal of tragic events.

Petit Pays, film percutant d’Éric Barbier nous plonge au cœur du terrible génocide rwandais, survenu en 1994, un conflit dont les séquelles seront immenses chez ceux, civils comme militaires, qui ont regardé la mort dans les yeux.
Pour son récit, Barbier a fait le choix scénaristique de demeurer, pour la majorité du temps, en périphérie de la violence brute, nous introduisant dans le conflit sous l’angle de la peur, de l’incertitude, de l’angoisse.
Sa montée en puissance nous fait découvrir l’histoire dans la perspective de l’enfance. Gabriel, enfant de 10 ans, vit des jours heureux au Burundi avec sa mère rwandaise, son père français et sa petite sœur, Ana. Il s’amuse avec ses amis tutsis et hutus qui cherchent, avec plus ou moins de succès, à aplanir leurs différends.
Mais peu à peu, le conflit sanglant entre hutus et tutsis au Rwanda déborde jusqu’au Burundi. Forcé de choisir son camp, Gabriel verra son existence basculer à tout jamais.
