The life of a professional hockey player was not always a glamorous one. For legendary goaltender Terry Sawchuk, each save means one more gash to his unmasked face and one more drink to numb the pain. Even with a wife and seven children at home, he is haunted by the void left from his childhood which he tried to fill with cheering crowds. Sawchuk traveled across the country racking up 103 shutouts and 400 stitches to his face, proving that this is a man who lives, breathes, and dies a goalie.
"[A] well-meaning, overly earnest biopic [that] aims to celebrate the life of Terry Sawchuk, a Winnipeg-born puckstopper who played 14 of his 21 seasons for the Detroit Red Wings. By the time his career ended, he had more games played (971), games won (447) and shutouts (103) than any goalie in NHL history at the time. He also helped bring home the Stanley Cup four times, including the last time it was won by the Toronto Maple Leafs, in 1967." - Chris Knight, National Post
"Director Maggs tells a tough, sympathetic story in an imaginative way that makes Goalie feel like a war story." - Brad Wheeler, Globe and Mail
