R.I.P. CARL WEATHERS! (APOLLO CREED)
PLAYING MAY 15TH!
Rocky Balboa is a struggling boxer trying to make the big time, working as a debt collector for a pittance. When heavyweight champion Apollo Creed visits Philadelphia, his managers want to set up an exhibition match between Creed and a struggling boxer, touting the fight as a chance for a "nobody" to become a "somebody". The match is supposed to be easily won by Creed, but someone forgot to tell Rocky, who sees this as his only shot at the big time.
THE PURE CINEMA SERIES is a new monthly film series curated by The Hyland Cinema that highlights culturally and historically significant films from decades like the 60s and 70s. Experience a carefully selected group of films from some of the most influentual and legendary directors such as Kubrick and Coppola where they are meant to be seen - on the silver screen!
ROCKY - FILM REVIEWS
"It's about heroism and realizing your potential, about taking your best shot and sticking by your girl. It sounds not only clichéd but corny -- and yet it's not, not a bit, because it really does work on those levels. It involves us emotionally, it makes us commit ourselves: We find, maybe to our surprise after remaining detached during so many movies, that this time we care." - Roger Ebert (FULL REVIEW HERE)
"Like the movies of Frank Capra, Rocky is a glowing tribute to the human spirit - a chin-up reminder that the decent, little guys of the world often accomplish the impossible if only because they try so hard." - Kathleen Carroll, New York Daily News (FULL REVIEW HERE)
