Projection Horror Stories

enter-the-dragon2.jpg

We acquired a beautiful 35mm print of Bruce Lee's historic masterpiece
Enter The Dragon. Made in 1973 this film print was a revelation! It is
in excellent condition for a print made 47 years ago.

drag_0.jpg
This print would be color faded to red or pink if it were a typical
Eastman color print but this print was made in the expensive dye
transfer process called IB Technicolor. It looked like the day it was
made with rich vibrant color and deep blacks. This movie was
re-released by Warner Brothers so many times over the years in the 70s
and 80s. The studios would clean up and treat old existing film prints
for re-release rather than make many new prints. The key word here is
treat! The process of treating or rejuvenating a print entailed coating
it with a chemical, both sides which would fill in the scratches and
give it a new shiny appearance. This was also a death sentence for the
print. All prints need to breath or they will quickly get vinegar
syndrome which cause's a chemical reaction.

The film will first start to shrink until it can no longer be run through a projector without tearing it apart. Later it will simply turn to goo and finally dust. So an original 35mm print of Enter The Dragon in excellent condition is very rare!

We were very excited to show this print for Retro-Mania At The Hyland
Cinema which we have now done twice!
We discovered a problem with this print. It was originally a print made
for British Cinema's and had an important minute cut by the British
censors. It was the violent part of a Bruce Lee fight scene which no
longer made any sense. We had to figure out a way to restore that
minute. The solution was to have that minute cued up via blu-ray. Our
projectionist inserted one minute of black silent film where the
missing footage was. This way the film could continue running through
the projector and all the projectionist had to do was switch sound and
image to a video projector and blu-ray during the minute of missing
film. Shutting off the video projector when the black footage ran out
would return the presentation to 35mm IB Technicolor.bruce.jpg
Worked like a charm and only added a few extra grey hairs to the projectionist!
